Sumburgh Head is a m high cliff located at the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland. It is a jagged rocky spur, and at the top, is Sumburgh Head lighthouse, which was built in by Robert Stevenson. Cars can reach halfway up to the top of Sumburgh Head and there is a car park at the midway point. The rest of the distance to the lighthouse must be taken by foot, and the path is steep but safe. Sumburgh Head is an ideal cliff to take children birdwatching, as there is a high stone dyke at either side of the path. By peering over the dyke, children can see puffins and many other seabirds whilst remaining far from the cliff edge.

Tinder in a big city often feels like a bottomless pit of unfamiliar faces, making it prime swiping territory for singles. But what happens when the majority of profiles you see are familiar faces? In the Shetland Islands, which has a population of around 23,, people who aren’t in the market for a date join Tinder just to be nosy and see what everyone else is doing.

In the Shetland Islands — an archipelago miles to the north of Scotland — swiping on Tinder feels much like scrolling through your Facebook feed. You’ll see familiar face upon familiar face, be they friends, family members, colleagues, ex-partners, and neighbours. Marjolein Robertson — who’s lived on her family’s croft in Shetland her whole life — says that Tinder is pretty popular on the islands, but she’s fairly certain no one’s using it right.

Many Shetlanders — even those in committed relationships — join Tinder just to be nosy and find out who’s looking for love. Much like your curtain-twitching neighbours snooping on you as you return home from a date. She says that Tinder in Shetland “makes no sense” because you’re likely to know half the people — sometimes more — you swipe through. She says if you decide to swipe right on someone you know, it’ll be perceived as “pretty serious” from the get-go.

I’m talking both halves of the couple,” says Robertson. It’s just a lot of people hanging around looking at other people. Simon, a Shetlander on Tinder who prefers to just use his first name, also says that being on Tinder in Shetland doesn’t necessarily mean you’re looking for a date. It’s such a small community that cheating is harder.

at Sumburgh, at the southern end of the Shetlands. Previous excavation had revealed an iron age site, dating from about the beginning of the Christian era.

This shorter tour is particularly suitable for cruise ship passengers. This tour which usually begins at Scalloway, the ancient capital of Shetland and at one time was dominated by the castle built in by Earl Patrick Stewart. From Scalloway we head south diverting through the very picturesque district of Fladdabister.

Like most places in Shetland, the name derives from the ancient Norse language and means ‘flat farm’. Fladdabister is a good place to see Shetland Ponies and hosts an abundance of wild flowers in the summer time. A few miles further on we approach the Sandwick viewpoint.

Kinnaird, T. Technical Report. This report provides optically stimulated luminescence OSL results for key stratigraphies from the vicinity of a Norse house at Sandwick South Unst , and from a farmstead at Broo, Quendale Mainland Shetland. At both sites, the sediment sequences associated with the nearby structures record accumulations of blown-sand, potentially linked to climatic instability.

David Sanderson and Gerry Bigelow visited the sites in November to sample undisturbed sand sequences associated with the built structures for OSL dating. Sampling pits were opened at both sites: at Sandwick South, the 2. During fieldwork portable OSL equipment, in combination with field spectrometry, was used to appraise luminescence stratigraphies, and identify the key units for OSL dating.

The test trench at Sandwick South was strategically positioned to examine the midden sequence in proximity to the built structure: profiling samples were collected from the lowest sands 3 samples , and from sand sequences enclosing the various midden units 7 samples , including clean, post-abandonment sands 4 samples. The field profile showed an overall increase in luminescence signals with depth, consistent with an age-depth progression.

Furthermore, each of the stratigraphic breaks identified in the field, corresponded with a step in signal level, suggesting temporal breaks across the sedimentary boundaries. Four OSL dating samples were collected, along with in-situ gamma spectra to cover the key stratigraphic units.
